  2. Glasgow. He worked for 20 years as an
  3. iron-moulder in Newcastle, entered Parliament
  4. 1903, and contributed to Labour's political
  5. organization. He was home secretary in the
  6. first Labour government, and was foreign
  7. secretary 1929-31, when he accorded the
  8. Soviet government full recognition. Nobel
  9. Peace Prize 1934.
